The Shea Family (2)

The following Shea members are possibly related to Calum and Jamie, although further work is required to confirm this is the right branch of the family:

Thomas Shea (17?? - 18??) md Honora Walsh (1794-30/11/1879)
Alice Shea (1816 or 27/7/1826 - 23/12/1880) md: Daniel Shea
Richard Shea (13/12/1827 - )
Ellen Shea (4/3/1838 - )

Thomas Shea
b: 177?? - bef 1879 - unconfirmed

Thomas Shea is potentially Calum's and Jamie's four times great grandfather.

Calum's and Jamie's confirmed three times great grandmother is Alice Shea, who married Daniel Shea in Templeorum Roman Catholic Church, County Kilkenny, in 1844.

When Alice died in 1882, her age was noted to be 66, placing her birth in about 1816. The records for Templeorum go back to 1809, but the only Alice Shea listed was one born in 1826, to Thomas Shea and Norry Walsh, of Ardclone, Templeorum (civil parish of Whitechurch, Co. Kilkenny).

If this is the correct Alice then she married at the age of 16 to Daniel who would have been 15 years older than her, not uncommon. However, very little else has so far been determined about her parents, save that they had at least two additional children.

Further work, and potentially DNA evidence, may help to firm up the case for these being the correct parents.

Ellen was baptised on 4 MAR 1838 at Templeorum, her parents noted as Thomas Shea and Honor Walsh. The sponsors were Thomas Delahunty and Margaret Carroll.

Alice Shea
1816 or 1826 - 24/3/1882

Alice was Calum's and Jamie's three times great grandmother.

Alice married Daniel Shea on 12 FEB 1844 through the Roman Catholic parish of Templeorum. The witnesses were Edmund Deady and Ellen Shea.

Alice had at least 9 children with Daniel at Baungariff townland, parish of Whitechurch (RC parish of Templeorum) in Co. Kilkenny, between 1845 and 1863.

Daniel eventually died on 23 DEC 1880 at Bawngariff (Baungariff), aged 77. His widow Alice died on 24 MAR 1882 at Bawngariff, parish of Owning. She was noted as aged 66, and as the wife of Daniel Shea, farmer (she is not noted as his widow, but as his wife). The cause of death was old age and debility, and the informant was her daughter Mary Shea. (Source: IrishGenealogy.ie, 1882 D, Group Reg ID 6817852 SRD Carrick-on-Suir).

Alice's death record suggests she was 66, placing her birth in about 1816. Although the parish records for Owning and Templeorum date back to 1809, only one baptism is found for an Alice Shea, on 27 JUL 1826, to a Thomas Shea and Norry Walsh, at Ardclone townland near Piltown. Further work needs to be carried out to confirm is these were indeed Alice's parents.
