Little is known of James, except that he married Margaret Downy prior to 1874, with whom he raised a family in County Tipperary.

Margaret died on 8 JUN 1939 at Tybroughney, aged 91, the cause being 'probably senile decay'. Her occupation was noted as 'house duties', and the informant to the Thomastown based registrar on 20 JUN was her son John Murray (GRO Ireland, D, Group Re ID 2051195, Thomastown).
